What a setting in the stunning Douro Valley, not far from one of my favorite cities in Europe, Porto! I recommend taking the train from there although it´s not the most comfortable ride but so much worth it! The 3h journey along the winding river is a very relaxing way to the hotel. Once you have reached Regua, a car awaits you at the train station and brings you to their beautiful property just above the river. The former private Villa is nestled in the vineyards and offers lovely views over the valley. It is surrounded by a magic forest that had been planted especially for the children of the former owner a long time ago; they had missed their old Cintra home with its enchanted forests.
This Resort invites you to spend the whole day without leaving the property. Enjoy dipping into the pool, going for a walk through the park and tasting delicious food from the hotel´s own vegetable gardens. Of course its wine selection is also outstanding, they offer great tastings and tours to wineries in the region.
I definitely recommend the rooms facing the river, from here you can see the sunrise over the mountains.
They´re cozy and comfortable, with all the luxury Six Senses has to offer. The Spa turn this Resort into a perfect hideaway for the cold months too. But in summer you´ll surely prefer being outside, enjoying the smell of lavender and taking the opportunity to experience the surrounding landscape. If you have the chance, go on a half-day boat ride in Pinhao from where you can take an old wooden boat for cruising along the Douro. Enjoy sitting on board, sipping delicious wine and tasting great snacks. On the way back you could arrange a dinner at DOC, one of the 3 award-winning restaurants of Chef Rui Paula.
Tip: Another obligatory culinary highlight is the Chef´s table in their own inhouse restaurant. Ljubomir Stanisic creates a personal menu in font of you, sitting at a table in the middle of the kitchen. This was by far the most extraordinary dinner-happening in my life. So personal and delicious, very much worth it!
